Education and Licensing

James received a Bachelors of Arts in English, creative writing from BIOLA University in Los Angeles, CA and earned a Masters in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. James is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHC), Child Mental Health Specialist (CMHS), and Mental Health Professional (MHP).

Experience and Therapeutic Style

James completed his internship in a community mental health setting, in which he met with children and adolescents at public schools. He learned to navigate school systems, including consistent conversation with teachers, principals and school counselors. James has also been involved in assisted education systems, such as IEP meetings, 504 plans and conversing with special education teachers regarding his clients’ needs in the classroom setting. James then moved on to work as a therapist in the Wraparound model with children and families in crisis. James made several home visits per week to provide individual, couples, and family therapy to his clients. He also worked on a 24/7 crisis line, in which he spoke with families in the midst of a crisis and traveled to psychiatric units and children’s hospitals to provide mental health assessments to clients experiencing suicidal ideation.

James’ therapeutic approach is primarily informed by relational therapy, attachment theory, and psychodynamic perspectives. James also uses neurobiological/neurodevelopmental research to help understand what might be going on for his clients on a physical level. Most importantly, however, James holds reverence for the human interaction and believes it is the role of the therapist to provide a consistent, safe, and healing environment through offering kindness and honesty in the therapeutic relationship.
