Michaela Cox

Education and Licensing

Michaela holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Writing from Metropolitan State University of Denver and received a Masters in Counseling Psychology from the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in 2012. Michaela is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), a Child Mental Health Specialist (CMHS), and a Mental Health Professional (MHP).

Experience and Therapeutic Style

Michaela has six years’ experience working as a therapist in the community mental health setting, where she saw children, adolescents, and adults, and also led parenting classes. Her work with children and adolescents often involves play and art therapy as a means of creating an open, accepting space in which kids and teens can feel safe to communicate. Michaela has significant experience working as a therapist to survivors of domestic violence and their children and she served on King County’s Children’s Domestic Violence Response Team. Michaela has been trained in a variety of therapeutic methods, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), a treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma, and the Nurtured Heart parenting approach.

Michaela’s understanding of counseling is most informed by attachment theory and the psychodynamic perspective, while also incorporating cognitive-behavioral skills into practice when appropriate. Recognizing that we are formed and impacted by relationship, treatment with Michaela often focuses on tending to current symptoms while also exploring how recent and past relationships have shaped one’s understanding of one’s self. Michaela seeks to create in therapy a safe, mutual space in which to process the laments of one’s heart, explore one’s hopes for restoration, and ultimately to seek and find whispers (or shouts) of the true name by which God has called each of us.
